His hypothesis is that the Large Hadron Collider emitted some mysterious new particle that caused lots of people to enter a state of quantum uncertainty, just like Schrodinger's Cat. The zombies, therefore, are both alive and dead, which explains why they appear dead, but keep wandering around.
